It is virtually impossible to predict which games machines will succeed and which will fail because that prediction is based on so many different factors. Likewise, it is also virtually impossible to compare machine against machine because some of them are out in the shops and some are not there yet.

The machines themselves are all different under the lid. Each has different processing chips, use different game storage systems and different controllers. Will people buy a particular machine because it has a certain chip inside or uses a certain storage media? No. All buyers want is a cool looking machine that plays great games.

Price, off course, will be a major factor and there will undoubtedly be price wars somewhere on the not too distant horizon when the muscle of each company will play a key role. Too high a high street retail price will scare people away, as was the case with the Sega 3DO machine.

Historically, the actual console release dates has proved to be vital on how a console fares in the market place. History is full of competent machines that proved to be sales disasters because they were released as the wrong time.

The machines that are already on the shelves have a tremendous advantage over their rivals. They will be pushing as hard as possible to get as many of their systems into buyers homes and get them playing their games. A late or delayed console release means a frantic game of catch-up for that company. They may never catch up.
